TopicMojo on AppSumo: Will This Actually Help Your Content Strategy?
An honest review of TopicMojo, a content research tool available on AppSumo. Learn about its topic modeling, social listening, and AI features to determine if this $59 lifetime deal can improve your content strategy. Includes hands-on testing and practical insights.
Content creation is a crucial part of any digital marketing strategy, but coming up with relevant topics can be challenging. TopicMojo aims to solve this problem by helping content creators identify what topics to focus on. In this review, I'll share my hands-on experience with TopicMojo and help you decide if it's worth the investment.
Intro [00:00]
TopicMojo is currently available as a lifetime deal on AppSumo, starting at $59. As with all my reviews, this is not sponsored content, and I'll be providing my honest assessment of the tool's capabilities and limitations.
For those interested, AppSumo is running their Black Friday sale until December 3rd (December 6th for Plus members), offering 10% off on all deals. If you're considering any AppSumo purchases, now is the time to act.
Plans & Pricing [01:11]
TopicMojo offers multiple pricing tiers, all providing essentially the same features but scaling based on usage. The main differentiator between tiers is the number of workspaces:
- Tier 1: 1 workspace
- Tier 2: 2 workspaces
- Tier 5: 5 workspaces + custom domain option
You can stack unlimited codes, making it flexible for agencies or those working with multiple clients. Each workspace typically corresponds to a single client or project.
Topic Model [01:58]
The Topic Model is one of TopicMojo's core features, functioning similarly to Google Trends but with additional capabilities. Here's what I found during testing:
- Allows input of short-tail keywords to discover longer-tail variations
- Provides trend analysis showing keyword popularity over time
- Generates extensive lists of related keywords (up to 178 pages in my test)
- 500 queries per month per code purchased, which seems generous for most use cases
One notable limitation is that SEO data is obscured unless you purchase their monthly SEO add-on ($15/month). While this is reasonably priced for SEO data, seeing locked metrics throughout the interface can be frustrating.
Views [04:28]
TopicMojo offers multiple viewing options for analyzing your results:
- Document mode for traditional list viewing
- Grouped view for seeing related terms together
- Tree view for hierarchical relationship visualization
- Source-based segmentation for platform-specific analysis
Categories [06:09]
Results can be filtered into various categories including:
- Questions
- Phrases
- Shopping-related queries
- Search-related queries
- Comparisons
- Local results
Social Model [06:52]
The Social Model feature analyzes how topics are being discussed across various social platforms. However, this feature has several limitations:
- Twitter integration appears non-functional
- YouTube results are inconsistent
- Preview capabilities are limited (no thumbnails or in-app video playback)
Sort & Filter [08:47]
The sorting and filtering capabilities have significant issues:
- Filter functions are unreliable
- Sort options don't work consistently
- View counts filtering is non-functional
- Date sorting is inconsistent
On the positive side, the data is current (showing same-day content), and you can export results to CSV, including titles and URLs.
Questions [10:22]
Similar to Answer The Public, this feature helps identify questions people are asking about your chosen topic. Results come from:
- Quora
While useful for content ideation, the feature suffers from the same SEO data limitation, with metrics hidden behind a paywall.
Generating AI Content [11:08]
The AppSumo deal includes 8 AI credits, but the AI content generation capabilities are basic:
- Limited word count compared to dedicated AI writing tools
- Basic output quality
- Multi-language support
- Results lack sophistication compared to tools like Cloud Pro, Merlin, or Strayco
Search Listener [11:47]
This new feature, not included in the AppSumo lifetime deal, claims to find keywords that have never been searched before on Google. However, the value proposition seems unclear, as keywords with no search volume may have limited practical use.
Outline [12:21]
The outline tool allows you to:
- View outlines of top-ranking articles
- Select up to five headings for content generation
- Generate AI content in multiple languages
- Create basic content structures
However, the output formatting is limited, and the content generated is notably brief compared to specialized AI writing tools.
Generating More AI Content [14:17]
Additional AI content generation attempts showed:
- Inconsistent output quality
- Limited control over content focus
- Basic article structure
- Word count around 400-500 words
Humanize [14:49]
The humanize feature attempts to make AI content sound more natural by:
- Rewriting content in a more conversational tone
- Condensing multiple paragraphs
- Improving introductions and transitions
- Basic reformatting of content
Write [15:31]
The writing interface offers:
- Basic keyword analysis
- Manual content creation tools
- No auto-save functionality
- Limited features compared to dedicated writing tools
Conclusion [16:21]
TopicMojo scores a 5.1 out of 10 in my evaluation. While it shows promise in concept, many features feel incomplete or unreliable. The strongest elements are:
- Topic Model feature
- Questions feature
- 500 monthly queries for each feature
- Multi-language support
However, several factors limit its effectiveness:
- Unreliable social listening tools
- Basic AI writing capabilities
- Interface performance issues
- Limited SEO data without subscription
For content creators who struggle with topic ideation or agencies managing multiple clients' content strategies, TopicMojo might provide value at its $59 lifetime deal price. However, it's not a must-have tool for everyone, particularly if you don't struggle with content ideation or have access to other research tools.
The tool would benefit from providing basic volume metrics without requiring the SEO add-on, as this information is crucial for prioritizing content topics.
For those who previously used Social Animal (which ceased operations in 2023), TopicMojo unfortunately doesn't fully fill that gap, offering a more limited feature set in its current state.
If you're considering TopicMojo, evaluate your specific needs for content research and topic discovery. While it can be useful for certain use cases, its current limitations make it a supplementary tool rather than a comprehensive content research solution.
